{"id":470205,"date":"2022-11-22T09:27:07","date_gmt":"2022-11-22T07:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=470205"},"modified":"2022-11-22T19:06:59","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T17:06:59","slug":"big-mtn-data-outage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/470205-big-mtn-data-outage.html","title":{"rendered":"Big MTN data outage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MTN customers have reported they cannot access the Internet on the operator&#8217;s mobile and fixed-LTE networks for several hours on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/mtn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MTN South Africa&#8217;s Downdetector page<\/strong><\/a> showed a significant increase in reports of issues on its network from around 07:00 AM.<\/p>\n<p>Most users that submitted reports said they either had no signal or were experiencing a problem with their mobile Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter was also filled with complaints from numerous unhappy MTN customers across the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t use my mobile data at all. I have to rely on Wi-Fi. This is not acceptable,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/addylebea\/status\/1594948656695853056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>said one user<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is there a problem with the network today? I keep getting disconnected from the Internet,&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NtembekoNgwanya\/status\/1594953194047934464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another asked<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The graph below shows the surge in complaints about MTN&#8217;s network on Downdetector on Tuesday, 22 November 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Downdetector-22-November-2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-470207\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Downdetector-22-November-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Downdetector-22-November-2022.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Downdetector-22-November-2022-600x239.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Downdetector-22-November-2022-800x319.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Downdetector-22-November-2022-768x306.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In MyBroadband&#8217;s own testing, we could not use the data connection on an MTN mobile SIM, while an MTN fixed-LTE package was also offline.<\/p>\n<p>Calls and SMSs appeared to be unaffected by the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Several prominent ISPs that resell packages on MTN&#8217;s network \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrihost.com\/site\/network_status\/#fixed-wireless\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Afrihost<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axxess.co.za\/network-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Axxess<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 confirmed they were aware of the problems on their dedicated outages pages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are aware of a connectivity problem affecting LTE and mobile clients,&#8221; Afrihost said in an update published at 08:09 AM. &#8220;Engineers [are] looking at the problem and hope to have it resolved soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At 08:42 AM, Axxess said it had received reports of users experiencing intermittent to no connectivity on their MTN mobile data and fixed-LTE services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are currently investigating with MTN and working on restoring services as soon as possible,&#8221; Axxess stated.<\/p>\n<p>Below is the update on the state of the MTN network on Afrihost&#8217;s outage tracker page.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Afrihost-outage-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-470209\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Afrihost-outage-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"852\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Afrihost-outage-.jpg 852w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Afrihost-outage--600x304.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Afrihost-outage--800x406.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MTN-Afrihost-outage--768x389.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 852px) 100vw, 852px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In response to complaints from customers on Twitter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MTNza\/status\/1594943058000416770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MTN said<\/strong><\/a> it had already identified the issue, and its engineers were working to resolve it.<\/p>\n<p>This incident is at least the third major outage MTN has suffered in the past few months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/455401-mtn-data-network-down-in-two-provinces.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>On 4 August 2022<\/strong><\/a>, the operator&#8217;s data network went down in the Free State and Western Cape provinces for over nine hours.<\/p>\n<p>Then, <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/464199-big-mtn-mobile-data-outage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>on 12 October 2022<\/strong><\/a>, the MTN data network was slow or offline for users across the country for around three hours.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"my-4\">Update \u2014 11:00<\/h2>\n<p>MTN confirmed to MyBroadband that there was a fault on its network and apologised to impacted customers for the inconvenience caused.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our engineers are attending to the matter with the aim of restoring connectivity as soon as possible,&#8221; the operator said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"my-4\">Update \u2014 18:00<\/h2>\n<p>In a second update at the end of the day, MTN explained the fault occurred during a network component upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This had resulted in intermittent connectivity issues,&#8221;
