Amazon.com Inc.\u2019s cloud unit is expanding a partnership with artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face Inc., which is developing a ChatGPT rival, the latest move as the biggest technology firms line up allies in an attention-getting\u00a0market for generative AI systems.<\/p>\n
Amazon Web Services will make Hugging Face\u2019s products, which include a language generation tool that competes with the technology behind OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT, available to cloud customers who want to use these tools as the building blocks of their own applications.<\/p>\n
Hugging Face will build\u00a0the next version of that language model, called\u00a0BLOOM<\/a>,<\/strong> on AWS, said Swami\u00a0Sivasubramanian, vice president of database, analytics and machine learning at Amazon\u2019s cloud unit.<\/p>\n Hugging Face, which makes AI products and hosts those developed by other companies,\u00a0is also working on open-source rivals to ChatGPT and will use AWS for that as well,\u00a0Clement Delangue<\/a><\/strong>, the startup\u2019s chief executive officer, said in an interview.<\/p>\n The two companies have a close relationship and already have 1,000 customers in common, Delangue said.<\/p>\n Still, the cloud deal is not exclusive, giving Hugging Face the ability to work with\u00a0other providers.<\/p>\n AWS already has more than 100,000 customers running AI applications in its cloud, Sivasubramanian said.<\/p>\n These customers will now be able to\u00a0access Hugging Face AI tools through Amazon\u2019s SageMaker program.<\/p>\n Additionally Hugging Face\u2019s software developers can use Amazon\u2019s cloud computing power and its chips designed for artificial intelligence\u00a0tasks.<\/p>\n The companies didn\u2019t disclose financial details of the partnership, but Amazon said it didn\u2019t invest in the startup.<\/p>\n The partnership comes amid a flurry\u00a0of agreements and investments that pair the largest cloud providers with companies working on generative AI.<\/p>\n Last month, Microsoft Corp. struck a deal to invest in ChatGPT maker OpenAI that\u2019s said to be valued at $10 billion, and is using the startup\u2019s\u00a0technology<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>for Bing search.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Alphabet Inc.\u2019s Google put nearly $400 million into OpenAI rival\u00a0Anthropic<\/a>,<\/strong> a person familiar with the matter said.<\/p>\n At stake is the ability to sell cloud-computing services to\u00a0take\u00a0advantage of a boom in interest in generative AI programs, which can create\u00a0new text, photos and graphics.<\/p>\n Because the programs sort through\u00a0a large volume of existing content in order to generate something new, they require considerable\u00a0computing power delivered via the cloud and represent lucrative businesses to Amazon, Microsoft and Google.<\/p>\n AWS already has partnerships with Stability AI, the maker of image-generation tool Stable Diffusion \u2014\u00a0a competitor to OpenAI\u2019s Dall-E \u2014\u00a0and Israeli AI company AI21 Labs, which makes another rival to OpenAI\u2019s GPT language model called Jurassic.<\/p>\n \u201cIt should not be about just one model that is going to rule the world,\u2019\u2019\u00a0said\u00a0Sivasubramanian of AWS. \u201cYou want developers to have a broad range.\u201d<\/p>\n Hugging Face\u2019s BLOOM was trained on a French publicly available supercomputer called Jean Zay.<\/p>\n The company sees using AWS for the coming version as a way to give\u00a0Hugging Face another option with a partner it has a good relationship with, Delangue said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is an important, meaningful alliance,\u201d he said. \u201cIt aligns with our vision of democratising machine learning, making it easier for all companies to build machine learning.\u201d<\/p>\n Hugging Face last year raised $100 million from investors including\u00a0Lux Capital, Sequoia Capital and Coatue Management, as well as basketball star Kevin Durant.<\/p>\n The company\u2019s repository of AI models serves as kind of a GitHub of machine-learning tools where developers can share work and collaborate.<\/p>\n Amazon
