{"id":48276,"date":"2012-04-20T07:53:12","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T05:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=48276"},"modified":"2012-04-20T07:54:20","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T05:54:20","slug":"microsoft-amazon-face-greenpeace-over-clean-cloud-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/48276-microsoft-amazon-face-greenpeace-over-clean-cloud-energy.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft, Amazon face Greenpeace over &#8220;clean cloud&#8221; energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Activists rappelled down a Seattle office building Thursday to get <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/211580-Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a title=\"Amazon.com\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/356046-Amazon\">Amazon.com<\/a> to use clean energy to power datacenters running services based in the Internet &#8220;cloud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two Greenpeace members launched from the roof of a new headquarters being built for Amazon.com, across a street from Microsoft offices, to hang a cloud-shaped banner with a message asking the companies &#8220;How clean is you cloud?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People want to use innovative devices and technology like the Kindle and <a title=\"Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/360852-Windows\">Windows<\/a> Phone without having to connect to a cloud powered by dirty and dangerous energy,&#8221; said Greenpeace International analyst Casey Harrell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amazon and Microsoft have the potential to power their cloud with green, renewable energy, but are falling behind competitors <a title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314567-Google\">Google<\/a>, <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/348566-Facebook\">Facebook<\/a> and <a title=\"Yahoo!\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/363118-Yahoo\">Yahoo!<\/a> in the race to build a truly clean cloud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The stunt came on the heels of a Greenpeace report grading major technology firms on the use of renewable energy sources to meeting rocketing datacenter demands and marked the start of a Clean Our Cloud campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon, <a title=\"Apple\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342717-Apple-inc\">Apple<\/a> and <a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/359584-Twitter\">Twitter<\/a> were graded poorly in a Greenpeace study of technology titans&#8217; use of clean energy to power the mushrooming Internet cloud, but Facebook, Google and Yahoo!
