{"id":482987,"date":"2023-03-08T12:54:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-08T10:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=482987"},"modified":"2023-03-08T12:54:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T10:54:26","slug":"facebooks-chatgpt-rival-leaks-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/482987-facebooks-chatgpt-rival-leaks-online.html","title":{"rendered":"Facebook&#8217;s ChatGPT rival leaks online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook&#8217;s large language model, which the company&#8217;s parent Meta Platforms is positioning as a potential rival for OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT, has leaked online.<\/p>\n<p>LLaMa, which stands for Large Language Model Meta AI, is officially only available for non-commercial use by certain Meta-approved users.<\/p>\n<p>These can include AI and machine learning researchers, civil society organisations, and government officials.<\/p>\n<p>But a torrent file to download the tool has appeared on multiple websites in the past few days.<\/p>\n<p>The file was initially uploaded to 4chan before spreading to other places on the Internet, including a GitHub repository.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/80.lv\/articles\/meta-s-ai-language-model-llama-gets-leaked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>report from 80.lv<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the first person to spot its emergence was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amasad\/status\/1631700069488660480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1631700069488660480%7Ctwgr%5E6ccd18d44e4f5d1add130080e4e458d2f1df361a%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2F80.lv%2Farticles%2Fmeta-s-ai-language-model-llama-gets-leaked%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Replit CEO Amjad Masad<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/xgwqgw\/facebooks-powerful-large-language-model-leaks-online-4chan-llama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>According to Vice<\/strong><\/a>, several users who downloaded the LLaMa tool could run it locally on their machines.<\/p>\n<p>Other prominent language models from Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are only available to the public through purpose-built consumer interfaces or APIs, which come with limitations to prevent abuse.<\/p>\n<p>However, some malicious users have been able to bypass some of ChatGPT&#8217;s security mechanisms and get it to create phishing emails and malware code.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear what the ramifications of a leaked LLaMa could be, but the tool presumably won&#8217;t have the types of mitigations in place with the current version Meta provides to legitimate users.<\/p>\n<p>Some developers have pointed out that the leak is not that big of a deal, as it was fairly easy to get legitimate access to the tool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All I did was put down that I&#8217;m a student studying machine learning and wanted to test the model, no proof required.
