{"id":484319,"date":"2023-03-22T07:16:06","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T05:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=484319"},"modified":"2023-03-22T07:19:35","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T05:19:35","slug":"dstv-vs-openview-vs-starsat-prices-and-channels-compared","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/484319-dstv-vs-openview-vs-starsat-prices-and-channels-compared.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv vs Openview vs StarSat \u2014 prices and channels compared"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africans who want to ditch DStv and its yearly price hikes but still want access to satellite TV can consider StarSat and Openview as alternatives and will likely save some money by doing so.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband compared DStv&#8217;s new prices for its Access, Family, and Compact packages to StarSat and Openview&#8217;s offerings.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2023, DStv <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/480173-dstv-announces-price-increases.html\">announced price increases<\/a><\/strong> for its packages that will take effect from 1 April. The price changes are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DStv Access<\/strong> \u2014 increasing to <strong>R129<\/strong> from <strong>R120<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>DStv Family<\/strong> \u2014 increasing to <strong>R319<\/strong> from <strong>R309<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>DStv Compact<\/strong> \u2014 increasing to <strong>R449<\/strong> from <strong>R429<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>DStv Compact Plus<\/strong> \u2014 increasing to <strong>R579<\/strong> from <strong>R549<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>DStv Premium<\/strong> \u2014 increasing to <strong>R879<\/strong> from <strong>R839<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Access fee<\/strong> \u2014 increasing to <strong>R115<\/strong> from <strong>R110<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These subscription fees are in addition to the once-off installation cost of R699 for an HD DStv decoder.<\/p>\n<p>StarSat customers also have to pay a once-off decoder and installation cost. However, it is slightly cheaper than DStv&#8217;s at R499.<\/p>\n<p>Openview has the highest setup and installation cost of the lost, but it is the only price they pay to access the service. The broadcaster doesn&#8217;t charge any monthly fees.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding monthly costs, StarSat offers three packages \u2014 Special, Super, and Max \u2014 for R120, R230, and R330 a month, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The available packages and their associated fees are summarised in the table below. This is even though DStv Compact&#8217;s monthly subscription fee is R119 more.<\/p>\n<p>The trend changes somewhat when we look at the mid-tier packages. Here DStv&#8217;s Family plan takes the top spot with 105 channels, while StarSat&#8217;s Super subscription offers 70.<\/p>\n<p>Competition between StarSat and DStv at the lower end of the spectrum \u2014 DStv Access and StarSat Special \u2014 is close, with only two channels separating the packages.<\/p>\n<p>DStv&#8217;s Access subscription offers 62 channels, while StarSat&#8217;s Special plan includes 60. Openview has the smallest catalogue of the services compared, with 21 channels.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband also analysed the cost of these packages over ten years to determine which is the cheapest over time. While it&#8217;s upfront price makes it the most expensive over the short term, it is quickly overtaken by other broadcast TV subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>DStv&#8217;s Compact and Family packages are the most expensive over ten years. However, it should be noted that the accumulative cost of StarSat&#8217;s Max package will overtake that of DStv Family at some future point.<\/p>\n<p>Over ten years, DStv Compact and Family&#8217;s costs will accumulate to R5,189 and R3,889, respectively.
