{"id":485293,"date":"2023-03-26T15:01:17","date_gmt":"2023-03-26T13:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=485293"},"modified":"2023-03-26T15:02:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-26T13:02:40","slug":"payshap-should-be-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/investing\/485293-payshap-should-be-free.html","title":{"rendered":"PayShap should be free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former FNB CEO and venture capitalist Michael Jordaan said that prohibitively high transaction costs will stifle the adoption of PayShap.<\/p>\n<p>PayShap is a new payment system launched by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and BankservAfrica, a company that processes electronic transactions.<\/p>\n<p>PayShap is intended to displace cash from the economy by allowing for instant transfers, which the receiver can verify in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>The service allows users to make payments using phone numbers, known as ShapIDs, rather than relying on bank account numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Fundi Tshazibana, a deputy governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), said that PayShap is an opportunity to reduce transaction costs and build trust in digital payment methods.<\/p>\n<p>Tshazibana said that small transactions have historically been cash-driven. India\u2019s UPI is free. Singapore\u2019s PayNow is free,\u201d Jordaan highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>However, in South Africa, using the service can carry significant costs which can hamper the uptake among cash-strapped communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems the big banks have priced this from R1 to R45.
