This has however not happened.

The uptake of MNP could at best be described as slow, but official figures were difficult to come by as mobile providers have been very reluctant to release numbers. Up to now that is.

According to the Vodacom Results Documentation the total ported customers from November 11 2006 to March 31 2007 is 49 794.

22 833 subscribers moved from Vodacom to another network while they gained 16 815 subscribers through MNP.

MTN have lost 20 537 customers to other networks since MNP was launched with 12 497 Vodacom and Cell C subscribers moving to MTN in the same period. Cell C lost 6 424 customers to their competitors while gaining 20 481 subscribers.

Jeffrey Hedberg, CEO of Cell C, said that while the numbers are disappointing their percentage estimates are close to what they expected. Hedberg conceded that the company did not see a significant return on their investment in MNP.

Hedberg further said that Vodacom and MTN do not have any incentive to make sure that the porting systems function as smoothly as possible, and that customer awareness about MNP is not what it should be.

Comments

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) did not prove to be the silver bullet both Cell C and Virgin Mobile thought it would be.
