{"id":487053,"date":"2023-04-08T07:49:52","date_gmt":"2023-04-08T05:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=487053"},"modified":"2023-04-08T08:38:56","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T06:38:56","slug":"ai-pause-will-benefit-china-former-google-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/487053-ai-pause-will-benefit-china-former-google-ceo.html","title":{"rendered":"AI pause will benefit China \u2014 Former Google CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Putting a temporary pause on artificial intelligence development would only hand an advantage to competitors in China, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said, after more than 1,000 researchers\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/pause-giant-ai-experiments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed a letter<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0warning of the consequences of moving too quickly on AI research.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Australian Financial Review in an interview published Friday, Schmidt said there were legitimate concerns about the speed of research into AI but they should be mitigated by tech companies working together to set standards.<\/p>\n<p>In the past week, more than 1,000 researchers and executives, including Tesla Inc. chief executive officer Elon Musk, signed an open letter published by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Future of Life Institute<\/a><\/strong>, which called for an AI research pause of \u201cat least six months,\u201d warning of \u201cpotentially catastrophic effects\u201d on society if appropriate governance wasn\u2019t put in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one \u2013 not even their creators \u2013 can understand, predict, or reliably control,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>But Schmidt said he wasn\u2019t in favour of the six-month pause as it would \u201csimply benefit China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I am in favour of is getting everyone together ASAP to discuss what are the appropriate guardrails,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>During the past week, Australia has moved to ban TikTok from government phones, while several state leaders have said they will stop using the Chinese-owned social media app.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt said he wasn\u2019t in favor of the recent bans on TikTok imposed by the US, the UK and Australia, but added Western governments needed to move more quickly to keep up with Chinese research and development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is very smart, they know what they are doing.
