{"id":487965,"date":"2023-04-17T12:04:01","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T10:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=487965"},"modified":"2023-04-17T12:05:45","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T10:05:45","slug":"major-ransomware-campaign-targets-mac-devices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/487965-major-ransomware-campaign-targets-mac-devices.html","title":{"rendered":"Major ransomware campaign targets Mac devices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cybersecurity researcher MalwareHunterTeam has discovered a ZIP archive on TotalVirus containing most of the available LockBit encryptors \u2014 including one targeting M1 Macs.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time the LockBit ransomware gang has built encryptors targeting Mac computers, and this is likely the first significant ransomware campaign to target macOS devices specifically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As much as I can tell, this is the first Apple&#8217;s Mac devices targeting build of LockBit ransomware sample seen\u2026 Also is this a first for the &#8216;big name&#8217; gangs?&#8221; MalwareHunterTeam <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/malwrhunterteam\/status\/1647384505550876675?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/strong> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The archive found on VirusTotal includes a LockBit encryptor named &#8220;locker_Apple_M1_64&#8221; targeting new Macs running Apple&#8217;s in-house silicon.<\/p>\n<p>It also contains some targeting PowerPC CPUs commonly used in older Macs.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the LockBit campaign used encryptors designed for Windows, Linux, and VMware ESXi servers.<\/p>\n<p>However, the archive also features encryptors for macOS, ARM, FreeBSD, MIPS, and SPARC CPUs that were previously unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Vx-Underground found an Apple M1 encryptor that has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vxunderground\/status\/1647427900352733185?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been in circulation since November 2022<\/a><\/strong>, meaning these samples have likely been around for some time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lockbit ransomware group has created their first MacOS-based payload. We believe this is the first time a large ransomware threat group has developed a payload for Apple products,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It appears we are late to the game.
