{"id":489529,"date":"2023-05-01T11:01:59","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T09:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=489529"},"modified":"2023-05-01T11:04:52","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T09:04:52","slug":"easyequities-boss-claps-back-at-critics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/investing\/489529-easyequities-boss-claps-back-at-critics.html","title":{"rendered":"EasyEquities boss claps back at critics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Purple Group CEO Charles Savage hit back at EasyEquities critics, saying the platform has achieved more for clients than any stockbroker before.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Purple Group released its financial results for the six months ended 28 February 2023, which revealed the company was struggling.<\/p>\n<p>It experienced a 158% deterioration in earnings, swinging from a net profit of R17.7 million to a net loss of R10.6 million over the reporting period.<\/p>\n<p>It sent the share price plummeting, adding further pain to Purple Group shareholders, who saw 66% of their value disappear since its peak in January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s poor performance attracted criticism, with people questioning the company\u2019s prospects and management\u2019s share tactics.<\/p>\n<p>36ONE Asset Management founder and CEO Cy Jacobs also expressed concern about Purple Group CEO Charles Savage\u2019s share sales.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cIt always concerned me listening to Charles Savage at the fourth Biznews Conference. So bullish but selling shares while on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs argued EasyEquities is not a unique product and that the complexities and costs of administrating so many clients are not a slam dunk.<\/p>\n<p>AltVest Capital chairman and BankerX founder Koshiek Karan said EasyEquities executives dumped R100 million in stock across the past 18 months while retail investors burned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile you were hustling to buy stock for close to R3.50, Purple Group executives were exercising their options to buy more stock at roughly 30 cents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Savage hit back at accusations that Purple Group executives were dumping their stock before the share price bloodbath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c99.9% placed with institutions who wanted and hold the shares today. Personally, I was a net buyer, as was the CFO,\u201d Savage said.<\/p>\n<p>Purple Group chief enablement officer Carel Nolte added that Savage and FO Gary van Dyk sold shares at the time to enable them to exercise options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrudely put, they didn\u2019t sell in Purple to take money to buy flashy cars but to largely invest more in the company,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Savage-tweet-responding-to-criticism.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-489533\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Savage-tweet-responding-to-criticism.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Savage-tweet-responding-to-criticism.jpg 850w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Savage-tweet-responding-to-criticism-600x282.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Savage-tweet-responding-to-criticism-800x376.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Savage-tweet-responding-to-criticism-768x361.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, 26 April, Savage took aim at EasyEquities critics, especially Karan and AltVest Capital, through a post on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was interesting to note the rhetoric that EasyEquities is easily replicable and has no defensive moat.<\/p>\n<p>An economic moat refers to a competitive advantage over the company\u2019s competition to preserve market share and profits.<\/p>\n<p>Savage said most of the criticism came from an \u201calternative competitor whose best efforts have yielded almost no clients and the sale of a game farm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said EasyEquities had achieved more for clients than any stockbroker before it and that it was just the start.<\/p>\n<p>Savage deleted the tweet after some Twitter users questioned the value of engaging in such a matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeleting tweet, fair comments, time to stay focused on what we are doing not anyone else. Cheers guys see you later,\u201d Savage explained.<\/p>\n<p>A day later, he posted, \u201cA tough but fair week. It\u2019s a brilliant solution to a burning problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said capital markets are unforgiving, and great solutions aren\u2019t always great businesses.<\/p>\n<p>He said Purple Group\u2019s valuation was driven to eye-watering levels because of a confluence of factors in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had retail euphoria, a surge in meme stocks, indulgent levels of stimulus, historic low-interest rates, the last gasps of a bull market, elevated stay-at-home trading activity, and the adrenalin fuel of a community raging off speculation,\u201d Karan said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Robinhood\u2019s stock price decline had been a great predictor of the EasyEquities collapse. \u201cThe greed\/fear pendulum is universal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe equity market bubble popped with consumers drowning in an avalanche of debt and battling steep energy prices and drained by exorbitant costs of living,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEasyEquities, at its peak, relied heavily on discretionary spending. Choosing between food stocks and actual food is a pretty easy choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karan said if the price is what you pay and value is what you get, the price shareholders paid for Purple Group, and therefore EasyEquities, a year ago was pretty steep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a sobering lesson in the inevitable gravity of fundamental valuations. Whether you\u2019re Tesla, Amazon or Purple Group, the fundamental valuation will always act as a magnet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes it takes months or even years, but it will happen. There was no obligation to exercise these options.<\/p>\n<p>Delving into the details revealed that all the share options allowed directors to pay between 35c and 75c per Purple Group share.
