{"id":490041,"date":"2023-05-04T11:50:24","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T09:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=490041"},"modified":"2023-05-04T11:53:11","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T09:53:11","slug":"goodbye-passwords-big-security-upgrade-for-google-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/490041-goodbye-passwords-big-security-upgrade-for-google-accounts.html","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye passwords \u2014 Big security upgrade for Google accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google has <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/safety-security\/the-beginning-of-the-end-of-the-password\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>started rolling out passkeys<\/strong><\/a> as an additional method for signing into Google Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Google began working with the FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft on passkey support in 2022 and has rolled out the feature for Chrome and Android.<\/p>\n<p>The company described the new feature as the &#8220;easiest and most secure way&#8221; to sign into apps and websites and a significant step toward a &#8220;passwordless future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While passwords will be with us for some time to come, they are often frustrating to remember and put you at risk if they end up in the wrong hands,&#8221; Google said.<\/p>\n<p>A passkey is a digital credential that eliminates the need to enter a username or password by being linked to a device \u2014 such as a smartphone or laptop.<\/p>\n<p>It uses a pair of private and public cryptographic keys \u2014 the first of which is stored on your device, while the latter gets uploaded to Google&#8217;s servers for verifying your identity.<\/p>\n<p>With this approach, Google said passkeys cannot be compromised if a hacker breaches its servers.<\/p>\n<p>Because it also doesn&#8217;t require entering a password, it reduces the chances of having your credentials phished.<\/p>\n<p>To sign into apps and services using a passkey, you use the same method for unlocking your device \u2014 like scanning a fingerprint or your face, or by entering a screen lock PIN.<\/p>\n<p>To enable Passkeys on your Google account, navigate to the Security tab of your <a href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google Account settings<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your stored Passkeys will be listed under the &#8220;How you sign in to Google&#8221;
