{"id":490415,"date":"2023-05-07T08:13:11","date_gmt":"2023-05-07T06:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=490415"},"modified":"2023-05-07T08:13:11","modified_gmt":"2023-05-07T06:13:11","slug":"army-redeployed-at-eskom-power-stations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/490415-army-redeployed-at-eskom-power-stations.html","title":{"rendered":"Army redeployed at Eskom power stations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s president has ordered army personnel to be stationed at power stations as theft and sabotage adds to the inability of state-owned utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. to meet electricity demand.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 880 members of the South African National Defence Force will be deployed at stations around the country until 17 October, presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Some 2,700 members were <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/474637-army-deployed-at-eskom-power-stations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>previously deployed<\/strong><\/a> between December 2022 and April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 de Ruyter, the former head of South Africa\u2019s state power utility, estimated the amount of money that\u2019s being stolen from Eskom at R1 billion a month.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa in April announced plans, to be implemented over the next six months, to limit power cuts that have crippled South Africa \u2014 included addressing criminality and reducing infrastructure sabotage at Eskom.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom is cutting 4,000 megawatts of power generating capacity from the nation\u2019s grid on Saturday due to the further breakdown of generating units, the company said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>The latest reduction was implemented at 5 a.m. and is planned to run through 4 p.m. local time on May 6.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-social-embedded\" data-social-media-type=\"twitter\" data-original-url=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Eskom_SA\/statuses\/1654650638750318592\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LoadsheddingUpdate?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#LoadsheddingUpdate<\/a><\/p>\n<p>06 May 2023: Due to the further breakdown of a generating units in the early hours of the morning, Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented at 05:00 this morning until 16:00 (previously Stage 3 loadshedding communicated).
