{"id":490505,"date":"2023-05-08T12:50:21","date_gmt":"2023-05-08T10:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=490505"},"modified":"2023-05-08T12:55:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T10:55:35","slug":"chatgpts-secret-trainer-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/490505-chatgpts-secret-trainer-army.html","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT&#8217;s secret trainer army"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OpenAI and other tech companies use numerous contract workers to help train artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p>An NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/innovation\/openai-chatgpt-ai-jobs-contractors-talk-shadow-workforce-powers-rcna81892\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>report<\/strong><\/a> recently highlighted the often-overlooked contribution of these workers.<\/p>\n<p>The media house spoke to one such worker \u2014 34-year-old Kansas resident Alexej Savreaux \u2014 who has worked as a data labelled and AI trainer for multiple startups, including OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p>Savreaux is among many that help fine-tune AI systems by teaching them how to analyse data and respond with the appropriate text and images.<\/p>\n<p>He previously worked in several so-called &#8220;low-skill&#8221; jobs, including as a fast food cook, custodian, and junk hauler.<\/p>\n<p>As an AI trainer, his primary task is giving feedback to ChatGPT, including sentences, labels, and other information, for the AI language model to learn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are grunt workers, but there would be no AI language systems without it,&#8221; said Savreux.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can design all the neural networks you want, you can get all the researchers involved you want, but without labellers, you have no ChatGPT.
