E-tv and Openview owner eMedia has promised that it is working on upgraded decoders for its satellite TV platform.<\/p>\n
In its annual financial results published on Thursday, eMedia said Openview would get \u201ca smarter set-top box\u201d with \u201cmemory facilities and Wi-Fi capability.\u201d<\/p>\n
eMedia made the same promise in last year\u2019s financial results<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n It also said Openview would receive \u201ca few more channels\u201d this fiscal year, between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024.<\/p>\n Since Openview is not a subscription service, eMedia reports set-top box (decoder) activations instead of subscriber numbers.<\/p>\n \u201cThe set-top box activations for Openview for the year amounted to 513,840, taking the amount of activated set-top boxes to 3,166,461,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n eMedia did launch a pay-TV add-on for Openview<\/strong><\/a> called Ultraview earlier this year, but the service was in operation for less than a month before the end of its financial year.<\/p>\n Regarding the channels Openview produces, eMedia said the ratings of six channels broadcast on Openview and DStv improved.<\/p>\n \u201ceExtra, eMovies Extra, and eReality rank in the top 15 of all satellite channels available in South Africa,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n eReality is broadcast exclusively on Openview, whereas eExtra and eMovies Extra are also available on DStv.<\/p>\n Openview accounted for 23.8% of eMedia\u2019s advertising revenue, amounting to R501.3 million \u2014 up from R468.7 million in the previous year.<\/p>\n \u201cProfitability in this unit has been maintained with content costs for the fiscal being pegged at R381.0 million,\u201d eMedia said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe distribution of the four Openview entertainment channels on MultiChoice [DStv], which contributed to the Group\u2019s audience and revenue share, is still under investigation by the Competition Commission after non-renewal of the channel carriage agreement,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n The Competition Appeal Court ruled in August that MultiChoice must reinstate four eMedia channels<\/strong><\/a> on the DStv platform after dropping them at the beginning of June 2022.<\/p>\n eMedia complained to the Competition Commission<\/strong><\/a> after MultiChoice refused to renew its channel supply agreement for E-tv Extra, eToonz, eMovies, and eMovies Extra.<\/p>\n The Competition Tribunal initially ruled in favour of MultiChoice<\/strong><\/a>, saying that eMedia\u2019s complaint does not meet the requirements for exclusionary conduct.<\/p>\n MultiChoice immediately dropped the channels, leading to an appeal by eMedia.<\/p>\n The Competition Appeal Court ordered that the channels be reinstated while the Competition Commission conducts an investigation.<\/p>\n eMedia said it still awaits the Competition Commission\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n eMedia has announced that its satellite TV service will be getting new channels this year \u2014\u00a0and upgraded decoders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":446108,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[51025,35,50823,84697],"class_list":["post-493353","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-emedia","tag-headline","tag-openview","tag-ultraview"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/493353"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/15"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=493353"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/493353\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/446108"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=493353"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=493353"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=493353"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
