{"id":4953,"date":"2008-08-23T05:48:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-23T03:48:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2008-08-23T05:48:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-23T03:48:00","slug":"low-bandwidth-video-streaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/4953-low-bandwidth-video-streaming.html","title":{"rendered":"Low bandwidth video streaming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A consortium comprising the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Durban-based internet service provider East Coast Access (ECA) has received a three-year R14,5-million investment by the Innovation Fund of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). <\/p>\n<p>The parties will join forces to develop a commercial-grade internet video broadcasting platform with integrated advertising for low bandwidth network infrastructure environments, as found in developing countries. <\/p>\n<p>The aim of the investment is to see the product through from research to market implementation of commercial applications, such as entertainment content with video advertisements. <\/p>\n<p>Lead project coordinator Dr. Keith Ferguson, a principal researcher at the Meraka Institute of the CSIR, will also oversee the development of the system design of the core media server software and part of the video research. <\/p>\n<p>Anice Hassim of ECA, a black economic empowerment company, will be responsible for the work on the web-based market-facing interface. <\/p>\n<p>Prof. H Anthony Chan and Prof. Mqhele E Dlodlo will lead the research at UCT and will be responsible for the supervision of two PhD and two MSc students who will research specialised areas of adaptive multimedia broadcasting. <\/p>\n<p>The project will deliver a smooth webcast in varying network conditions found in low bandwidth environments and other technically and infrastructurally-constrained networks. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=132815\"><strong>Video streaming discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>EngineerIT<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CSIR to develop video broadcasting platform for low bandwidth environments<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4953","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-internet"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4953"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4953"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4953\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4953"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4953"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4953"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
