{"id":496255,"date":"2023-06-14T08:23:18","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T06:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=496255"},"modified":"2023-06-14T18:08:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T16:08:00","slug":"amazon-web-services-outage-takes-down-major-websites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/496255-amazon-web-services-outage-takes-down-major-websites.html","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Web Services outage takes down major websites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon.com Inc.\u2019s cloud-computing arm said it resolved an outage that had disrupted a swath of companies and organisations, including Southwest Airlines Co. and New York\u2019s transit agency.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon Web Services are now \u201coperating normally,\u201d according to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>status pag<\/strong>e<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The company said it began investigating \u201cincreased error rates and latencies\u201d in one of its data centre clusters shortly after 3 p.m. New York time.<\/p>\n<p>The failures affected the company\u2019s US-EAST-1 region, which is centered in northern Virginia and is Amazon\u2019s most important data center hub.<\/p>\n<p>AWS is the world\u2019s largest seller of on-demand computing power and software services, which it delivers from a network of vast server farms<\/p>\n<p>That means its outages can ripple across the internet, creating headaches for a range of companies and industries.<\/p>\n<p>The Verge news site, for instance,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/13\/23759827\/a-massive-aws-outage-means-we-cant-update-the-front-page-but-were-still-here\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Tuesday that the disruption left it unable to update its home page.<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, technologists reported not being able to log into the AWS console, the portal they use to manage AWS services.<\/p>\n<p>And the MTA took to the social media site\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MTA\/status\/1668705741572653063?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>to<\/strong> <strong>report<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that train service information on its website and MYmta app were unavailable because of the AWS outage.<\/p>\n<p>Viktor Pali \u2014 co-founder of Craft Docs, a Hungary-based document collaboration startup \u2014 said in a LinkedIn message that the outage temporarily took down the company\u2019s web app and shared documents, though users on smartphone applications could still access the software.<\/p>\n<p>Pali said the outage appeared to be the most severe for AWS since\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-08\/amazon-outage-sparks-anger-as-fridges-stop-people-locked-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a December 2021 outage<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that took down websites, Roomba vacuums and Amazon\u2019s own delivery network software.<\/p>\n<p>AWS\u2019s status\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">page<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0reported that Tuesday\u2019s failures stemmed from an issue with the company\u2019s Lambda service, a product that spins up computing power in response to events.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of other AWS services were affected, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>In an update to its status page posted at 6:42 p.m. in New York, the company said \u201cthe issue has been resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"my-4\">Now read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/495255-data-centre-explosion-in-south-africa.html\" rel=\"bookmark\">Data centre boom in South Africa<\/a><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWS is the world\u2019s largest seller of on-demand computing power and software services, which it delivers from a network of vast server farms.
