But with the six-core processor Intel is poised to leap ahead of the competition.

The new series processors, dubbed "Dunnington", are expected in mid-September.

AMD had a rough 2007 but this year has made back some of the lost ground with its triple-core and quad-core Phenom processors. Now, however, it is again playing catch-up with it’s dominant rival.

The six-core Dunnington processors will include three models: An Xeon X7460 running at 2.67GHz, the E7450 at 2.4GHz and the L7455 with a 2.13GHz clock speed.

The X7460 will have 16MB of L3 cache which will give it hefty power boost. The other two variations will have 12MB L3 cache onboard.

"The big cache and six cores will give customers a nice bump in performance," said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s digital enterprise group.

Intel processor discussion

[15

post-4986","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-hardware
