{"id":507070,"date":"2023-09-07T09:04:06","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T07:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=507070"},"modified":"2023-09-07T17:24:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T15:24:03","slug":"us-scraps-first-hypersonic-missile-flight-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/507070-us-scraps-first-hypersonic-missile-flight-test.html","title":{"rendered":"US scraps first hypersonic missile flight test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US scrapped a test on Wednesday of what\u2019s meant to be the Army\u2019s first hypersonic missile in its arsenal, a setback as the US looks to catch up with China for a crucial weapon of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe department planned to conduct a flight test at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida to inform our hypersonic technology development but as a result of pre-flight checks the test did not occur,\u201d the Defense Department said in a statement to Bloomberg News, referring to the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t say what led the test to be cancelled. Yet the decision raises questions about the program\u2019s schedule and whether the Army can meet its goal of declaring the weapon initially combat capable by Sept. 30, which would also mark the Pentagon\u2019s first hypersonic weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The US Defence Intelligence Agency said in March that China was in the lead as far as developing hypersonic weapons, which can fly fast and low and may carry nuclear warheads.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that even without the flight test, \u201cthe department was able to successfully collect data on the performance of the ground hardware and software that will inform the continued progress toward fielding offensive hypersonic weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Army has experienced a number of test delays and \u2018no-tests\u2019 since 2021,\u201d according to a Congressional Research Service report.<\/p>\n<p>An Army spokesperson had no immediate comment.
