Inside, the Mini includes a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor, an Intel 950 media graphics accelerator, 512MB of DDR2 SDRAM, and a 4GB solid-state drive. A 3-in-1 memory card reader, USB2.0 and VGA and ethernet ports and 802.11g Wi-Fi round out the machine.

Battery life is around four hours according to Dell.

The Mini 9 will cost $349 (around R2 700) with Ubuntu. A Windows XP version is estimated to cost an extra R400.

The version of Ubuntu included on the Dell Mini is expected to include Netbook Remix, Ubuntu’s mini notebook-specific desktop interface. Mark Murphy, writing on the Canonical blog yesterday, said that the Dell Mini would include a "custom launcher", which suggests Netbook Remix.

Murphy says that Canonical started to work with Dell "over a year ago, prompted by an incredible response from the Dell community to its Dell IdeaStorm, culminating very quickly with the launch of numerous Ubuntu-based products in the last year.

Over that time we’ve seen the relationship between Dell and Canonical’s engineering teams in China, Taiwan and US go from strength to strength, with the result that Dell has broadened both its Ubuntu product range and increased availability across the globe. Just recently we’ve seen Dell release its new Vostro range into high-volume, emerging markets."

Dell Mini discussion

[15

post-5112","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-hardware
