faces lawmaker grilling over show cancellation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US lawmakers are pressing Apple Inc. for information about its streaming show\u00a0<em>The Problem With Jon Stewart<\/em>, which was reportedly cancelled following disagreements over how to handle topics such as China.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Gallagher, a Republican from Wisconsin, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat from Illinois, sent a letter to chief executive officer Tim Cook about the decision not to produce a third season of the show on Apple TV+.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers \u2014 the top Republican and Democrat on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP \u2014 cited a New York Times report that said topics related to China and artificial intelligence caused concern among Apple executives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe support the ability of artists, writers, studios and streaming services alike to create content without fear of potential CCP retaliation and punishment,\u201d the lawmakers said in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2023-11-15-letter-to-apple-re-jon-stewart.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the letter<\/a><\/strong>, which was posted online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile companies have the right to determine what content is appropriate for their streaming service, the coercive tactics of a foreign power should not be directly or indirectly influencing these determinations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A representative for Cupertino, California-based Apple didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart, a veteran of\u00a0<em>The Daily Show<\/em>\u00a0on Comedy Central, served as host and executive producer of the Apple TV+ series, which aired from 2021 until this year.<\/p>\n<p>The hourlong talk show delved into issues such as globalisation and the US incarceration epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher and Krishnamoorthi requested a briefing with Apple by 15 December so they \u201ccan better understand the facts giving rise to the recent news reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also anticipate speaking with representatives of Mr. Stewart,\u201d they said in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-11-01\/apple-tv-price-shows-vs-netflix-vs-hbo-max-vs-disney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0its TV+ platform in 2019 and has spent billions of dollars on programming.<\/p>\n<p>The $9.99-a-month offering is part of a broader push by the
