{"id":515833,"date":"2023-11-20T12:46:38","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T10:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=515833"},"modified":"2023-11-20T12:47:38","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T10:47:38","slug":"nothing-pulls-its-imessage-for-android-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/515833-nothing-pulls-its-imessage-for-android-app.html","title":{"rendered":"Nothing pulls its iMessage-for-Android app"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Phonemaker Nothing has delayed the launch of its Chats app after it was forced to pull the beta over widespread privacy concerns, the company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nothing\/status\/1725902458189119690?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a><\/strong> on Twitter (now X).<\/p>\n<p>Several players have noticed privacy flaws, with Kishan Bagaria, founder of Texts.com, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KishanBagaria\/status\/1725586252630540555?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describing the app<\/a><\/strong> as &#8220;extremely insecure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>His team&#8217;s investigation revealed that &#8220;all outgoing texts are being linked to a sentry server in plaintext&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/11\/18\/nothing-chats-sunbird-unencrypted-data-privacy-nightmare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9to5Google<\/a><\/strong> tore down the app as part of its investigation, and it found that Nothing Chats doesn&#8217;t have end-to-end encryption and that attachments sent could easily be accessed in plain text.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve removed the Nothing Chats beta from the Play Store and will be delaying the launch until further notice to work with Sunbird to fix several bugs,&#8221; Nothing announced in response to the concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We apologise for the delay and will do right by our users.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/smartphones\/515189-goodbye-green-bubbles-how-android-smartphones-are-getting-apple-imessage-support.html\">Nothing&#8217;s Chats app<\/a><\/strong> was designed to solve the lack of interoperability between Apple&#8217;s iMessage and RCS messaging.<\/p>\n<p>iPhone Messages doesn&#8217;t support RCS, and Android can&#8217;t support iMessage because Apple has not opened up the standard.<\/p>\n<p>The messaging platform is built on Sunbird, a unified messaging platform that has been in closed beta testing since the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It lets users access all chats, including iMessage conversations, using a single interface.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing Chats ships with support for several iMessage features, including high-resolution media sharing, group messaging, and typing indicators.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand that the blue bubble vs. green bubble dilemma, especially in North America \u2014 although seemingly ridiculous \u2014 is real,&#8221;
