After two years of delays and production snags, Tesla Inc. has finally handed the first\u00a0Blade Runner<\/em>-esque Cybertrucks over to customers.<\/p>\n

Chief executive officer Elon Musk delivered a handful of vehicles to their new owners Thursday, including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.<\/p>\n

The handovers at Tesla\u2019s Austin headquarters were part of a live-streamed launch event on X, the social media platform Musk owns.<\/p>\n

The Cybertruck comes in three configurations: rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and the so-called Cyberbeast.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0cheapest version<\/a><\/strong> of the Cybertruck will cost $60,990 (R1.15 million), which is more than 50% over the price Musk floated when he announced the vehicle in 2019.<\/p>\n

That version, a rear-wheel drive model with a battery range of 250 miles (402km), won\u2019t be available until 2025. Tesla is offering delivery next year for the two more expensive models, including the Cyberbeast, which has a price tag of nearly $100,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot more expensive than I thought,\u201d said Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to get production up to get the price down, and they know they can\u2019t produce a lot of them next year. The reality is that the Cybertruck isn\u2019t really out yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tesla shares fell 2% in extended trading at 5:15 p.m. New York time.<\/p>\n

The Cybertruck marks Tesla\u2019s first entry into the highly competitive pickup truck market in the US, and the move has been met with excitement, but also heavy criticism and doubt.<\/p>\n

One analyst suggested last week the automaker should cancel the Cybertruck altogether because it\u2019s unlikely to be profitable, while Musk himself has lamented how\u00a0\u201cinsanely difficult\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>the vehicle is to produce.<\/p>\n

When Tesla started taking deposits for the Cybertruck in 2019, it marketed\u00a0starting prices<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0ranging from $39,900 to $69,900.<\/p>\n

The EV maker\u2019s website shows \u201cprobable savings\u201d for the Cybertruck models including federal tax credits and estimated gas savings over three years.<\/p>\n

The company calculates the cheapest version will cost $49,890 with those savings.<\/p>\n

Musk said on Thursday he\u2019s confident it would meet buyers\u2019 needs, whether they be flash or utility.<\/p>\n

The Cybertruck is \u201ca better truck than truck while also being a better sports car than a sports car,\u201d Musk said to the audience.<\/p>\n

The fastest Cybertruck can reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 2.6 seconds, as fast as a Porsche 911 Turbo S \u2014 though not as quick as a Tesla Model S Plaid.<\/p>\n

Tesla says it can tow up to 11,000 pounds, more than a battery-powered Ford F-150 Lightning and some gas-fueled F-150 models.<\/p>\n

It also boasts a 17-inch ground clearance, which is more than all versions of the F-150 and electric Rivian R1T pickup.<\/p>\n

But the cheapest Cybertruck is thousands of dollars more than the commercial grade electric F-150, which\u00a0starts at<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0$49,995, and the base retail model starting at $54,995.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an incredibly useful truck,\u201d Musk said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a grandstanding showpiece \u2014 like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cyberbeast is capable of having more than 440 miles of range by adding an additional toolbox-sized battery against the back of the cab in the bed.<\/p>\n

The specs were confirmed by Tesla\u2019s powertrain chief in a message on X.<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s web page for the Cybertruck includes details that Musk didn\u2019t discuss during his presentation, including the \u201ctheatre on wheels\u201d with front and back touch screens and \u201crecording studio sound dynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n
