{"id":519913,"date":"2023-12-14T13:54:59","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T11:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=519913"},"modified":"2023-12-14T13:54:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T11:54:59","slug":"big-location-privacy-upgrade-coming-to-google-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/519913-big-location-privacy-upgrade-coming-to-google-maps.html","title":{"rendered":"Big location privacy upgrade coming to Google Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google Maps will start allowing users to store their location history on their devices instead of on the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, Google Maps users who turn the Location History setting on will have the app&#8217;s Timeline feature store their movement data.<\/p>\n<p>This is stored on Google&#8217;s servers, where the company says it is encrypted to protect against malicious abuse.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/maps\/updates-to-location-history-and-new-controls-coming-soon-to-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>recent blog post<\/strong><\/a>, Google Maps product director Malo McGriff explained the app&#8217;s Timeline feature would start storing users&#8217; location data on their devices by default.<\/p>\n<p>For users switching to a new phone or those concerned about losing their current one,\u00a0 Google will continue to offer the ability to back up location data to the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll automatically encrypt your backed-up data so no one can read it, including Google,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the on-device location data storage, Google is adding the ability to delete place-related activity from Maps over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Say you&#8217;re planning a surprise birthday party, and you get directions to a nearby bakery to pick up the cake,&#8221;
