Telkom<\/a> services in Springs, east of Johannesburg, have been disrupted following an incident of multiple cable theft in the area. Over 1,000 corporate and residential customers have been affected by this crippling crime.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, 6 June, cable thieves broke into Telkom’s underground infrastructure access to cut and remove the cables feeding seven street distribution cabinets in surrounding areas. Telkom has reported the crime and a police investigation is currently underway.<\/p>\n

The suburbs of Casseldale and Strubenvale with telephone codes 815, 812 and 362 have been affected.<\/p>\n

“We apologise to customers who have been affected by this incident of cable theft. Business and residential customers are severely affected due to an alarming amount of copper cable theft that results in service interruptions,” said Theo Hess<\/a>, Telkom Managing Executive for Network Field Services.<\/p>\n

“The severity of the impact is due to the fact that ICT services are a vital component to the running of businesses and an integral part of everyday living.”<\/p>\n

“Our technicians have already begun working on restoring services in the area and remain committed to progressively restoring all services by Monday, 11 June. Telkom has also increased security measures in the area to discourage any recurrences of this crime in the area,” Hess said.<\/p>\n

Telkom said that working closely with the Non-Ferrous Theft Combating Committee (NFTCC), Business Against Crime, and the South African Police Services, their network protection efforts have resulted in 295 arrests over the past six months.<\/p>\n

Telkom said that affected customers qualify for pro-rata rebates on their line rentals.<\/p>\n
