TVs, gaming consoles, and mobile phones were some of the most in-demand tech products for shoppers at three of South Africa’s biggest retailers during the 2023 December holidays.<\/p>\n

The shopping period around Christmas and New Year’s Eve is typically busy with people buying luxuries and must-haves.<\/p>\n

In December 2022, load-shedding products ranked highly<\/strong><\/a> in sales from South Africa’s biggest online retailer \u2014 Takealot \u2014 and one of the country’s biggest brick-and-mortar stores \u2014 Makro.<\/p>\n

Those sales were likely driven by increased load-shedding during the festive period.<\/p>\n

This time around, Eskom suspended load-shedding from the morning of 14 December 2023 until early on 2 January 2024.<\/p>\n

MyBroadband asked Takealot, Makro, and another popular physical retailer \u2014 Game \u2014 what their top sellers were between 16 and 31 December 2023.<\/p>\n

Takealot said it recorded year-on-year sales growth for December.<\/p>\n

That is despite not selling liquor products in the last two weeks of the month due to a licensing issue<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2023, tech products featured high on Takealot’s list, with gaming hardware, including PlayStation and Xbox consoles and accessories topping the charts.<\/p>\n

Samsung Galaxy smartphones were also among the most popular items, followed by beauty and skincare products, specifically serums.<\/p>\n

Moving down the list, Takealot recorded high sales of TVs, wearable tech such as Garmin smartwatches, and a fast charger for iPhones with a USB-C to Lightning cable.<\/p>\n

In addition, consumables like 18-roll BabySoft 2-ply toilet paper packs, Finish Auto dishwashing tablets, and Mondi Rotatrium A4 printing paper sold well.<\/p>\n

Takealot also provided a list of its most popular categories of products during the period, which was as follows:<\/p>\n

    Makro’s analysis of its customers’ online shopping trends showed strong participation in the electronics, outdoor, and home improvement categories.<\/p>\n

    “The festive period also saw high levels of activity from our Stokvel customers, who used their accumulated savings to stock up on products across a wide range of categories, including dry groceries, fresh food and personal hygiene,” Makro said.<\/p>\n

    The retailer provided a breakdown of its top-selling products for specific identified customer types.<\/p>\n

    Among “Techno Buffs”, it found the Samsung 65-inch smart UHD TV was the most popular.<\/p>\n

    “Liquor Aficionados” preferred Jameson Irish Whisky over other drinks, while “Braaiers” opted for the Weber compact kettle braai.<\/p>\n

    Game told MyBroadband that its consumers shopped a diverse mix of essentials and high-tech items.<\/p>\n

    In its case, it saw a surge in demand for mobile phones and PlayStation 5 consoles, which it believed were likely intended as gifts for the festive season.<\/p>\n

    In the essential items category, soft drinks, Choice Assorted cookies, and milk were popular throughout December.<\/p>\n

    Other most-shopped categories at Game throughout December were appliances, grocery and pantry, as well as multimedia and laptops.<\/p>\n
