{"id":521753,"date":"2024-01-16T10:40:11","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T08:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=521753"},"modified":"2024-01-16T10:41:33","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T08:41:33","slug":"showmax-considering-cheaper-ad-supported-package","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/521753-showmax-considering-cheaper-ad-supported-package.html","title":{"rendered":"Showmax considering cheaper ad-supported package"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice is considering introducing an ad-supported tier for Showmax, CEO Marc Jury has said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of debates around price points in terms of the commercial viability of a streaming platform,\u201d Jury told MyBroadband in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>He was answering a question about whether they would consider introducing a tiered subscription model like Netflix, offering 4K and more concurrent streams for a higher price, or keep it simple like Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome have used an advertising-led tier to allow them to keep prices low, offer advertising on a very low-cost model, and then introduce a higher paid-for tier where customers can also get 4K content and other things and be ad-free,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is something we are looking at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a media Q&amp;A on Monday for the launch of Showmax 2.0, he was asked directly about an ad-supported tier, to which he said, \u201cNever say never.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/521603-multichoice-announces-showmax-2-0-launch-date.html\"><strong>MultiChoice announced launch details<\/strong><\/a> for the revamped \u201cShowmax 2.0\u201d at a media event on Monday \u2014 including a price cut for its original service from R99 to R89 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Its new mobile-only Showmax Premier League product will launch for R69 per month, while the Showmax Mobile general entertainment service is R39 per month.<\/p>\n<p>The streaming service will also offer a Premier League and Showmax Mobile bundle for R99 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Running ads significantly increases the complexity of a streaming platform.<\/p>\n<p>The technical complexity should be less of an issue for Showmax, as it is now powered by NBCUniversal\u2019s Peacock, which already supports ads.<\/p>\n<p>However, MultiChoice or Showmax would still have to sell ads for the platform and run all associated administration.<\/p>\n<p>If Showmax were to offer ad-supported products in other African countries where it operates, this complexity and its associated cost would be multiplied for every territory added.<\/p>\n<p>While Netflix and Disney+ offer cheaper ad-supported packages, neither of these products are available in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the two international media giants have launched mobile-only plans in South Africa, similar to the one Showmax already offers.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix and Disney\u2019s mobile plans are both R49 per month \u2014 R10 more expensive than Showmax.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice is considering launching a more affordable ad-supported subscription tier for Showmax.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":515255,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[723,12857,61855,35,475,2054,53431,32140],"class_list":["post-521753","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-amazon","tag-disney","tag-disney-plus","tag-headline","tag-multichoice","tag-netflix","tag-prime-video","tag-showmax"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/521753"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/15"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=521753"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/521753\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/515255"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=521753"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=521753"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=521753"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
