Earlier today (12 June 2012) Engadget reported that leaked screenshots from the iOS 6 developer beta running on an iPhone 4S revealed TomTom as Apple\u2019s data provider for its new Maps<\/a> app.<\/p>\n

The Dutch navigation company later confirmed that it has signed a global agreement with Apple<\/a> for \u201cmaps and related information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apple announced its new Maps app during its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco last night (11 June 2012).<\/p>\n

The company claimed that it built the app from the ground up, suggesting that it was doing away with Google<\/a> Maps as the platform for its Maps application. TomTom\u2019s<\/a> appearance in the leaked screenshots support this conclusion.<\/p>\n

This may be good news for South Africans as TomTom offers maps and connected services such as traffic information through its LIVE platform in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, TomTom has declined to reveal any further details on which services it provides and where they might be available.<\/p>\n

When asked whether South African users could expect map coverage and traffic information from TomTom in the new iOS 6 Maps app, they referred to their earlier statement which said, \u201cNo further details of the agreement will be provided.\u201d<\/p>\n

TomTom\u2019s communications representatives in South Africa informed MyBroadband that a full press release will follow shortly.<\/p>\n

It is unclear whether this new press statement from TomTom will mention South Africa specifically.<\/p>\n
