<\/strong>Following the release of thousands of applications for generic top-level domains by ICANN<\/a>, tech news site Cnet spotted some strange domain name requests among the more typical \u201c.google\u201d and \u201c.apple\u201d applications.<\/p>\n

Google<\/a> applied for a variety of domain names, ranging from the more serious ‘.google’, to the light-hearted, including ‘.lol’, ‘.wow’ and ‘.fun’.<\/p>\n

Other companies tended to be more specific with their applications, including Singapore’s Changi Airport and Discover Card, which paid the $185,000 application fee to secure ‘.changiairport’ and ‘.cashbackbonus’, respectively.<\/p>\n

Demand Media is a content farm with a stake in more than 130 top-level domains. These include ‘.airforce’, ‘.army’, ‘.navy’ and ‘.ninja’ – domains which may in future be used by the four deadliest types of armed forces.<\/p>\n

Other stand-out names included ‘.citadel’ applied for by Citadel Investment Group, and ‘.unicorn’ applied for by European IT company, Unicorn.<\/p>\n
