<\/strong>Tablet shipment estimates have been raised by market researcher IDC, following strong demand for the mobile devices.<\/p>\n

Higher than expected demand in the second half of 2012 has prompted IDC to raise their forecasts to 107.4 million units sold in 2012, up from 106.1 million.<\/p>\n

The Apple<\/a> iPad will account for 62.5 percent of shipments, up from 58.2 percent in 2011. Android\u2019s<\/a> market share is expected to slide from 38.7 percent in 2011, down to 36.5 percent.<\/p>\n

IDC also revised its 2013 sales forecast to 142.8 million units, up from 137.4 million. Worldwide shipments for 2016 are now estimated to reach 222.1 million units.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemand for media tablets remains robust, and we see an increasing interest in the category from the commercial side,\u201d said Tom Mainelli, research director of Mobile Connected Devices at IDC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect pending new products from major players, increasingly affordable mainstream devices, and a huge marketing blitz from Microsoft<\/a> around Windows 8<\/a> to drive increased consumer interest in the category through the end of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n
