It was well below the national average and out of sync with the rest of the industry.

MTN’s strong network performance follows substantial investment into its infrastructure in South Africa.

The mobile operator invested R10 billion into its network over the last year and increased its capital expenditure in South Africa by 15%.

This included upgrading infrastructure with batteries and generators to improve its network availability.

While MTN reigned supreme in overall network quality, Vodacom has emerged as the best 5G network provider.

Vodacom has focused a large part of its network investment on its 5G rollout, which helped it to top the 5G speed rankings.

Despite Vodacom’s impressive 5G performance, MTN’s comprehensive network coverage and quality across LTE and 5G helped it to offer a superior overall service.

MTN was the best-performing network in Cape Town, eThekwini, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, and Nelson Mandela Bay. Vodacom dominated in Johannesburg.

Another noteworthy finding was that Cell C significantly improved its network performance over the last year.

Cell C’s average download speed increased from 28.70 Mbps in Q1 2023 to 39.32 Mbps in Q1 2024.

This improvement helped Cell C to overtake Telkom and rank third behind MTN and Vodacom in network quality.

The following chart depicts the LTE, 5G, and overall Network Quality Scores of South Africa’s mobile network operators for Q1 2024.

Best mobile network in South Africa

To determine the best mobile network in South Africa, a “Network Quality Score” was calculated for each network using download speed, upload speed, and latency.

The Network Quality Score out of 10 then shows how a network performed relative to other networks.

MTN achieved a Network Quality Score of 9.66, followed by Vodacom at 8.14, Cell C at 6.09, Telkom at 5.24, and Rain at 4.75.

The table below provides an overview of the mobile network rankings in South Africa.

Network Operator

Download Speed (Mbps)

Upload Speed (Mbps)

Latency (ms)

Network Quality Score

MTN

82.48

24.03

29

9.66

Vodacom

77.45

14.74

30

8.14

Cell C

39.32

13.36

42

6.09

Telkom

30.49

10.72

37

5.24

Rain

19.41

10.31

28

4.75

MyBroadband Insights has released its first quarter results for 2024, showing that MTN remains the best mobile network in South Africa overall, while Vodacom has the best 5G network.

[62528,14
64917,45136,355,35,42,60107,22891,109,41
post-531641","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-5g","category-cellular","tag-analytico","tag-best-mobile-network","tag-cell-c","tag-headline","tag-mtn","tag-mybroadband-insights","tag-mybroadband-speed-test","tag-telkom","tag-vodacom
