{"id":53207,"date":"2012-06-21T16:04:51","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T14:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=53207"},"modified":"2012-06-22T12:32:10","modified_gmt":"2012-06-22T10:32:10","slug":"microsoft-schnaaied-nokia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/53207-microsoft-schnaaied-nokia.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft schnaaied Nokia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just two months after the US launch of <a title=\"Nokia\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314603-Nokia-Corporation\">Nokia\u2019s<\/a> flagship <a title=\"Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/360852-Windows\">Windows<\/a> Phone 7 device, Microsoft announced that the next version of its mobile operating system (OS) would not run on devices available right now.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa the situation is even worse for Nokia with the Lumia 900 getting a launch date the day before Microsoft confirmed what had been feared: Windows Phone 8 was for new hardware only.<\/p>\n<p>Windows Phone 8 is set for release \u201cthis fall\u201d (which is American for somewhere from September to November 2012) and will be launching on <a title=\"HTC\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/340335-HTC-Corp.\">HTC<\/a>, <a title=\"Huawei\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/347796-Huawei\">Huawei<\/a>, <a title=\"Nokia\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314603-Nokia-Corporation\">Nokia<\/a>, and <a title=\"Samsung\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/333656-Samsung\">Samsung<\/a> devices across 180 countries.<\/p>\n<p>For those who have been paying attention, you may have already picked up where Nokia, or at least its customers, were schnaaied:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>January 2012<\/strong>: Nokia Lumia 900 announced at CES where it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/best-of-ces\/\" target=\"_blank\">won Cnet\u2019s Best of Show award<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>January-March 2012<\/strong>: Speculation abounds on Lumia 900 launch dates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>April 2012<\/strong>: Nokia Lumia 900 launches in the US, Vodacom tells MyBroadband they won\u2019t be bringing in the device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>19 June 2012<\/strong>: Microsoft SA, <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a>, and Nokia SA announce with big fanfare that the Lumia 900 will be launching locally on 28 June 2012.<\/li>\n<li><strong>20 June 2012:<\/strong> Microsoft announces that Windows Phone 7 won\u2019t be upgradable to Windows Phone 8.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It should be pointed out that Windows Phone devices aren\u2019t the only ones being left behind as the version number increments.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> OS 6 devices such as the BlackBerry Torch 9800 weren\u2019t upgradeable to version 7 of the OS. The devices were announced globally and released in SA <a title=\"New BlackBerry 7 Smartphones unveiled\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/30824-new-blackberry-7-smartphones-unveiled.html\">about a year apart<\/a>, but it still stung if you were stuck on a contract and unable to upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>Some devices using Google\u2019s <a title=\"Android Mobile Oerating System\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/221979-Google-Android\">Android<\/a> mobile OS have similar issues with upgradability, though this is typically up to manufacturers and not Google.<\/p>\n<p>One prominent example was HTC announcing that its Desire handset would not be getting an upgrade to Android 2.3 \u201cGingerbread\u201d. The HTC Desire had been out for 8 months when Google released Gingerbread.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53127\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53127\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53127\" title=\"Windows Phone 8\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Windows-Phone-81.jpg\" alt=\"Windows Phone 8\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Windows-Phone-81.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Windows-Phone-81-100x66.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Windows-Phone-81-185x123.jpg 185w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Windows-Phone-81-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windows Phone 8<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"so\">What are Windows Phone 7 users missing out on?<\/h3>\n<p>Part of the problem with Microsoft\u2019s recent announcement around Windows Phone 8, however, is that it isn\u2019t clear what exactly Windows Phone 7 users will be missing out on.<\/p>\n<p>Making official what was already an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/4\/17\/2956439\/windows-phone-8-apollo-no-upgrade\/in\/2848723\" target=\"_blank\">open secret<\/a>, Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7.8 as the upgrade path to existing \u201cMango\u201d users.<\/p>\n<p>The upgrade is set to be available around the same time as Windows Phone 8 is launched and will bring the new start screen and other \u201ccore customer experiences\u201d to WP7.<\/p>\n<p>Does this mean that features such as Skype will finally work properly? Will Samsung users get the benefit of integrated Nokia Maps?
