{"id":532101,"date":"2024-04-11T08:49:38","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T06:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=532101"},"modified":"2024-04-11T08:50:33","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T06:50:33","slug":"meta-announces-new-ai-chip-to-decrease-reliance-on-nvidia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/532101-meta-announces-new-ai-chip-to-decrease-reliance-on-nvidia.html","title":{"rendered":"Meta announces new AI chip to decrease reliance on Nvidia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Meta Platforms Inc. is deploying a new homegrown chip to help power its artificial intelligence (AI) services, aiming to decrease its reliance on semiconductors from Nvidia Corp. and other outside companies.<\/p>\n<p>The chip,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ai.meta.com\/blog\/next-generation-meta-training-inference-accelerator-AI-MTIA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Wednesday, is the latest version of the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, or MTIA, which helps rank and recommend content across Facebook and Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Meta released the first MTIA product\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-18\/meta-s-pricey-bet-on-ai-comes-with-new-custom-chips-coder-tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last year<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s pivot to AI services has brought increased demand for computing power.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the social media giant released its own version of an\u00a0AI model\u00a0to compete with OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p>It also added new generative AI\u00a0features\u00a0to its social apps, including customized stickers and celebrity-faced chatbot characters.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the company said it would spend as much as<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>$35 billion on infrastructure to support AI, including data centers and hardware.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI will be our biggest investment area in 2024,\u201d Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg told investors that month.<\/p>\n<p>A significant amount of that spending will likely still flow to Nvidia, which builds the popular H100 graphics cards that power AI models.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Zuckerberg said the company would acquire 350,000 of those chips, which cost tens of thousands of dollars each.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s a growing movement among tech giants to develop chips in-house.<\/p>\n<p>Meta is joining rivals Amazon.com Inc.\u2019s AWS, Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.\u2019s Google in trying to wean themselves off a very expensive dependency. It won\u2019t be a quick fix, though.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the efforts haven\u2019t made a dent in the industry\u2019s insatiable need for Nvidia\u2019s AI accelerators.<\/p>\n<p>The AI boom has helped turn Nvidia into the world\u2019s third-most-valuable tech company, behind only Microsoft and Apple Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Its sales to data center operators totaled $47.5 billion in fiscal 2024, up from just $15 billion the year before.
