{"id":533703,"date":"2024-04-23T17:25:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T15:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=533703"},"modified":"2024-04-23T17:31:50","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T15:31:50","slug":"multichoice-chairman-resigns-with-immediate-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/533703-multichoice-chairman-resigns-with-immediate-effect.html","title":{"rendered":"MultiChoice chairman resigns with immediate effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice chairman Imtiaz Patel is stepping down with immediate effect and is being replaced by Elias Masilela.<\/p>\n<p>This comes three weeks after MultiChoice announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/530777-multichoice-scraps-chairmans-resignation.html\"><strong>Patel\u2019s resignation had been put on hold<\/strong><\/a> so he could preside over negotiations with French media giant Groupe Canal+.<\/p>\n<p>Canal+ was compelled to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/527555-canal-increases-offer-to-buy-multichoice-to-r35-9-billion.html\">make a mandatory offer<\/a><\/strong> to buy MultiChoice earlier this year when it exceeded the 35% shareholding threshold stipulated in the Companies Act.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice had announced in September last year that <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/507498-multichoice-chairman-steps-down.html\"><strong>Patel would step down<\/strong><\/a> on 1 April 2024.<\/p>\n<p>He would remain involved as a consultant to MultiChoice until October 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Business Times recently reported that MultiChoice\u2019s last-minute decision to extend Patel\u2019s tenure had <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/532461-tension-at-multichoice-over-last-minute-leadership-changes.html\"><strong>caused rifts at the company<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, MultiChoice said the decision was unanimous. It also noted that Patel would not receive any additional fees he wouldn\u2019t otherwise have.<\/p>\n<p>Patel declined to comment, referring queries to MultiChoice, while Masilela said he supported the decision.<\/p>\n<p>In the notice issued on 2 April \u2014 after a board meeting on 28 March \u2014 MultiChoice\u2019s board said it believed there was significant benefit in continuity at this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Patel has agreed to extend his tenure until the conclusion of the Canal+ transaction or such sooner date as may be determined in light of progress on the transaction,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>However, in today\u2019s notice, MultiChoice said the plan was always for Patel to step down once certain milestones were reached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time of announcement of 2 April 2024, discussions were in their final stages on key terms of the proposed transaction,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>These culminated when MultiChoice and Canal+ entered into a cooperation agreement on 7 April 2024 and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/531547-dstv-owner-considering-r35-billion-cash-buyout-offer.html\">issued an announcement of firm intention<\/a><\/strong> the following day.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice confirmed that Patel would remain involved with the group as a consultant as per the original announcement of his resignation on 11 September 2023.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked MultiChoice whether, with the benefit of hindsight, it would go back and explain this more clearly and avoid all the negative press from its 2 April notice.<\/p>\n<p>It said it would not because there are regulatory processes involved requiring that things be done according to a set protocol.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice says it was the plan all along for Imtiaz Patel to step down after the details of the Canal+ deal were hammered out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":507502,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[85,89266,35,2860,475],"class_list":["post-533703","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-dstv","tag-elias-masilela","tag-headline","tag-imtiaz-patel","tag-multichoice"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/533703"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/15"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=533703"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/533703\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":533705,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/533703\/revisions\/533705"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/507502"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=533703"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=533703"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=533703"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
