{"id":539239,"date":"2024-05-31T15:05:21","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T13:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=539239"},"modified":"2024-05-31T15:11:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T13:11:58","slug":"big-seacom-cable-break-repairs-finished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/539239-big-seacom-cable-break-repairs-finished.html","title":{"rendered":"Big Seacom cable break repairs finished"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fault on the damaged Seacom cable off the east coast of Africa has been repaired, according to reports from various observers in the space.<\/p>\n<p>Seacom was damaged in <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/536373-big-internet-cable-faults-cause-connectivity-problems.html\">early May 2024<\/a> along with the Eastern African Submarine System (EASSy) cable.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked Seacom to confirm whether the faults had been repaired, but it hadn&#8217;t provided feedback by publication.<\/p>\n<p>ITA co-founder and CEO Rolf Mendelsohn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/rolf-mendelsohn-52b3ba21_eassy-is-up-and-running-since-thursday-night-activity-7201831233272614913--2sD?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> pictures of the repair on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seacom is due to be restored soon, the damage to both cables was caused by a Trawler,&#8221; said Mendelsohn.<\/p>\n<p>Phillipe Devaux, who describes himself as a keen observer of the global submarine cable systems industry, said on Tuesday, 28 May 2024, that Orange Marine&#8217;s L\u00e9on Th\u00e9venin was working on the repairs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cable ship L\u00e9on Th\u00e9venin currently busy over Seacom CWG (Cable Working Ground) off Mtunzini, after some mystifying northwards excursions back and forth, off Richards Bay,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/philippe-devaux-218423199_28may24-east-africa-eassy-seacom-subsea-activity-7201242741538783234-3sGH?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the disruption, Liquid Intelligent Technologies group CTIO Ben Roberts said a fault was confirmed on the EASSy cable, and they were observing a fault on the Seacom cable.<\/p>\n<p>While many South Africans complained of poor Netflix performance and difficulties accessing other services, Roberts said the faults severely impacted Internet services in East Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the challenges faced in South Africa were likely caused by several terrestrial cable failures, which reduced capacity between Johannesburg and Cape Town.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_539267\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-539267\" class=\"size-full wp-image-539267\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Seacom-cable-repair-pics-Rolf-Mendelsohn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Seacom-cable-repair-pics-Rolf-Mendelsohn.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Seacom-cable-repair-pics-Rolf-Mendelsohn-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Seacom-cable-repair-pics-Rolf-Mendelsohn-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Seacom-cable-repair-pics-Rolf-Mendelsohn-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-539267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos of the damaged cable. From: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/rolf-mendelsohn-52b3ba21_eassy-is-up-and-running-since-thursday-night-activity-7201831233272614913--2sD?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rolf Mendelsohn<\/a> on LinkedIn.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to Roberts, Liquid Intelligent Technologies had ruled out sabotage and said the two cables going down simultaneously was a coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) confirmed on 23 May that repairs to the EASSy cable were <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/538311-big-internet-cable-break-repairs-almost-finished.html\">almost complete<\/a> and that the damage was consistent with a heavy object being dragged over it.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic returned to EASSy on Friday, 24 May.<\/p>\n<p>EASSy is a <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/529275-all-the-undersea-cables-connecting-south-africa-to-the-rest-of-the-world.html\">10,000km undersea fibre optic cable<\/a> system connecting countries in Eastern Africa to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>The L\u00e9on Th\u00e9venin was tasked with repairing the EASSy cable. It remained in the area to complete repairs to the broken Seacom cable.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/home\/centerx:31.7\/centery:-29.2\/zoom:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marine Traffic<\/a>, the vessel is anchored off-shore near Mthunzini. It can tackle repairs in depths ranging from 10 metres to 7km.<\/p>\n<p>It is equipped with various tools, including grapnels, buoys, ropes, and dead weights, designed to assist with cable work.<\/p>\n<p>It also has a remotely operated vehicle onboard.
