Google Chrome has pulled ahead of Mozilla Firefox by a nose to take the place of second most-used browser in South Africa according to the latest browser usage stats from StatCounter.<\/p>\n
The rival browsers have been neck-and-neck in SA for a few months, but this marks the first time StatCounter has tracked a higher local usage share for Chrome.<\/p>\n
StatCounter\u2019s statistics also show that Chrome is still the most used browser in the world with 32.76% of the market, over Internet Explorer\u2019s 32.31%.<\/p>\n
Chrome pulled ahead of Internet Explorer (IE) in May 2012 after Microsoft\u2019s browser took a sharp dive from 34.07% share to 32.12%. IE is actually up in June, but still finds itself second to Google\u2019s browser.<\/p>\n
Net Applications, a company that runs its own web analytics system, paints a somewhat different picture to StatCounter.<\/p>\n
According to their stats, Internet Explorer is comfortably in the lead with 54% of the global browser market share, followed by Firefox (20%) and then Chrome (19%).<\/p>\n
The disparity between the two analytics companies may be related to the different way in which they rank browsers. StatCounter measures market share based on raw pageviews, whereas Net Applications uses unique visitors weighted by the number of Internet users in a country.<\/p>\n
