{"id":540789,"date":"2024-06-12T13:52:49","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T11:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=540789"},"modified":"2024-06-29T22:51:07","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T20:51:07","slug":"showmaxs-first-revenue-numbers-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/540789-showmaxs-first-revenue-numbers-released.html","title":{"rendered":"Showmax&#8217;s first revenue numbers released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice has released its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2024, revealing strong growth in revenue generated by its streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) service, Showmax.<\/p>\n<p>It reported revenue of R1 billion for Showmax for the financial year, up 22% from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;FY24 represented a pivotal year for Showmax. Having officially concluded the partnership with Comcast in April 2023, the long-awaited relaunch took place in February 2024,&#8221; said MultiChoice.<\/p>\n<p>Showmax&#8217;s revenue grew from approximately R820 million in FY2023 to R1 billion in FY2024.<\/p>\n<p>However, MultiChoice noted that Showmax&#8217;s trading losses increased to R2.6 billion, below the expected range of R3 billion to R4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>It noted that this was due to some operational expenditure and depreciation shifting into FY2025, given the launch of Showmax towards the end of FY2024.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice relaunched Showmax through its partnership with Comcast in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p>It says Showmax&#8217;s growth post-relaunch compensated for the termination of its higher-average revenue per user (ARPU) Showmax Pro service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Showmax, which relaunched in February, is showing encouraging early traction,&#8221; said MultiChoice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It delivered record single-month growth in March 2024, with the paying subscriber base growing 16% from the migrated base at relaunch to year-end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It noted that revenue from Showmax subscription fees grew by 1% year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice highlighted several figures relating to its Showmax subscriber base post-relaunch, including that 100% of subscribers had migrated to the new platform and subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>It said over 88% of those who migrated are still active and paying for the service.<\/p>\n<p>In late May 2023, former MultiChoice connected video boss Yolisa Phahle said Showmax would make <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/493513-showmax-boss-says-it-will-make-r18-billion-in-five-years.html\">R18 billion in net revenue<\/a> in five years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are aiming to generate revenue of more than $1 billion after five years, with a trading profit breakeven target in full-year 2027,&#8221; said Phahle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are targeting EBITDA margins of 25% and free cash flow margins of around 20% at scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She explained that many players see Africa as the final frontier for SVOD growth and that Showmax aims to become the leading streaming platform in Africa with Showmax 2.0.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice published its annual results for the 2024 financial year, revealing strong revenue growth for Showmax.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":341076,"featured_media":520975,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[35,475,32140,90497,23998],"class_list":["post-540789","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-headline","tag-multichoice","tag-showmax","tag-showmax-2-0","tag-yolisa-phahle"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/540789"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/341076"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=540789"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/540789\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":540793,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/540789\/revisions\/540793"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/520975"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=540789"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=540789"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=540789"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
