{"id":540903,"date":"2024-06-14T12:50:09","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T10:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=540903"},"modified":"2024-06-14T12:50:09","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T10:50:09","slug":"dstv-stream-subscribers-surge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/540903-dstv-stream-subscribers-surge.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv Stream subscribers surge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice has released its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2024, revealing strong subscriber growth for DStv Stream.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, its DStv Extra Stream product saw slightly increased uptake over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice relaunched its streaming service \u2014 previously DStv Now \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/502048-multichoice-announces-dstv-stream.html\">renamed it DStv Stream<\/a> in July 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Since the relaunch, DStv Stream&#8217;s active users have increased by 139%, and MultiChoice says more than 90% are new to the service.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2023, the company re-introduced the ability for users to watch DStv Stream on up to two devices simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/502728-big-dstv-streaming-changes.html\">Extra Stream<\/a>, the product is only available on mobile devices. Since its introduction, Extra Stream subscribers have increased by 13%.<\/p>\n<p>The feature lets viewers stream DStv Stream content concurrently on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop without disrupting the primary stream, which works on any Internet-connected device.<\/p>\n<p>Pricing varies based on the primary package linked to the account as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DStv Premium Extra Stream \u2014 R99 per month<\/li>\n<li>DStv Compact Plus Extra Stream \u2014 R79 per month<\/li>\n<li>DStv Compact Extra Stream \u2014 R49 per month<\/li>\n<li>DStv Family Extra Stream \u2014 R39 per month<\/li>\n<li>DStv Access Extra Stream \u2014 R29 per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MultiChoice also introduced a streaming-only package for its cheapest bouquet, DStv EasyView, at R29 per month.<\/p>\n<p>However, it doesn&#8217;t come with the ability to add another stream.<\/p>\n<p>The change came roughly a year and a half after MultiChoice <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/438376-dstv-starts-limiting-streaming-to-one-device.html\">cut the number of concurrent<\/a> online streaming feeds from two to one.<\/p>\n<p>Despite facing backlash over its initial announcement, DStv started limiting concurrent streaming to one device on 22 March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each DStv subscription allows you to stream on one app at a time. This means you can use the app on a maximum of four devices, with management of the devices done on the app,&#8221; its updated FAQ page says.<\/p>\n<p>The limit on current streams applies to all DStv Stream packages across Africa, but users can still pre-download content to watch while someone else is streaming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-541045\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/DStv-Stream-charts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/DStv-Stream-charts.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/DStv-Stream-charts-600x269.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/DStv-Stream-charts-800x358.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/DStv-Stream-charts-768x344.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/434800-dstv-cracks-down-on-streaming-pirates-and-password-sharing.html\">plans to limit streams<\/a> a month before the change took effect, creating an uproar among subscribers, with some threatening to boycott the service.<\/p>\n<p>Others said they would cancel their subscriptions when the changes kick in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve had DStv since 2004, but I&#8217;m going to cancel my subscription because you are only allowing one device to stream at a time,&#8221; one DStv subscriber said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, that&#8217;s the end of my DStv subscription.
