{"id":542911,"date":"2024-07-02T13:43:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T11:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=542911"},"modified":"2024-07-02T15:31:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T13:31:04","slug":"big-problems-at-standard-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/542911-big-problems-at-standard-bank.html","title":{"rendered":"Big problems at Standard Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Numerous Standard Bank customers have taken to social media to complain of fraudulent charges on their accounts in the past few days.<\/p>\n<p>Many reported that their accounts had been blocked despite not having reported any fraud or issues, leaving them unable to access their money.<\/p>\n<p>The issues have led to customers being held up on Standard Bank&#8217;s fraud line for well over an hour.<\/p>\n<p>The sheer volume of reports have also stirred rumours that the bank suffered some sort of mass data breach or system failure had exposed customers&#8217; card details.<\/p>\n<p>However, Standard Bank has insisted that there had been no breach of its systems, instead blaming the issues on a spike in month-end transactions, which\u00a0had supposedly caused delayed responses from its call centre.<\/p>\n<p>While outage tracker Downdetector showed nothing out of the ordinary, Twitter\/X was inundated with dozens of complaints about fraudulent transaction and blocked accounts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hi Standard Bank. What is going on with your fraud department this morning?&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/emuntonmay\/status\/1808087906608898439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one user posted<\/a>. &#8220;All my accounts are blocked, I cannot contact you as the queue for fraud is over 522 people long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I experienced fraudulent activities on my account, youh, your fraud line doesn&#8217;t work. Almost 23 minutes of holding the line,&#8221; another <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rapelangwm\/status\/1808070073367908514\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A third user said they had been on hold with the fraud line for <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OfficialMashudu\/status\/1808052784777806187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an hour and a half<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One customer claims they had <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RANDYCTZA\/status\/1808093232103920001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R25,000 taken off their account<\/a> across two transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Another customer that <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/youngtodayblog\/status\/1808099107707228248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a> to his post said that they had R9,000 taken from their cheque account on Sunday, 30 June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How did the transactions go through when I have a clear limit on both online and card payments? They need to give us answers and our money back,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>Many customers have had their accounts blocked despite not having contacted Standard Bank regarding any fraud-related issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve checked and you seem not to be getting my issue. I&#8217;ve never reported any fraud, you flagged my card and put a note that I must call you,&#8221; one user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TebatsoNgoepe\/status\/1808065334257279027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said at 11:09<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I got to the branch at 08:30.
