{"id":545165,"date":"2024-07-19T08:24:35","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T06:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=545165"},"modified":"2024-07-19T10:19:52","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T08:19:52","slug":"massive-capitec-outage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/545165-massive-capitec-outage.html","title":{"rendered":"Massive Capitec outage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Capitec was hit by a significant outage affecting all its customer-facing services on Friday, 19 July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was caused by downtime at cloud cybersecurity platform Crowdstrike.<\/p>\n<p>Outage tracking website <a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/capitec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downdetector<\/a> showed a big surge in reports of issues with Capitec&#8217;s services from around 07:00.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of complaints were related to mobile banking, online banking, and ATM services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=Capitec&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Numerous customers on X\/Twitter<\/a> complained about transactions getting declined, ATM services not working, and the mobile banking app being inaccessible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m held ransom at a filling station because payments are declining. Now I have to wait or leave my phone,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/smallbusineses\/status\/1814176233728438492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one user said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is up with your app? I can&#8217;t cash send or pay beneficiary. Now the app says &#8216;no Internet connection&#8217; and refuses to open. Very frustrating,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SuburbianST\/status\/1814174113679765590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another customer said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other Capitec users attempting to open their accounts on the iOS mobile banking app were presented with an error\u00a0 &#8220;Unable to process your selection, try again later.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In response, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CapitecBankSA\/status\/1814178581993472107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capitec&#8217;s support team said<\/a> it was currently experiencing nationwide issues affecting all services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working hard to resolve this. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,&#8221; the bank stated.<\/p>\n<p>The bank also sent an SMS to some customers, informing them it was aware of the issues.<\/p>\n<p>Capitec&#8217;s previous major service outage<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/455501-big-capitec-outage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 2022,<\/a> lasted for several days.
