{"id":545545,"date":"2024-07-23T08:18:25","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T06:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=545545"},"modified":"2024-07-23T08:18:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T06:18:25","slug":"google-backpedals-on-chrome-cookies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/545545-google-backpedals-on-chrome-cookies.html","title":{"rendered":"Google backpedals on Chrome cookies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alphabet&#8217;s Google said it plans to give people who use its Chrome web browser the option to choose a more privacy-sensitive experience, rather than phasing out cookies, the software that lets marketers track users.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/privacysandbox.com\/intl\/en_us\/news\/privacy-sandbox-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>, the company said it had made the decision after considering the impact that eliminating cookies would have on publishers, advertisers and others involved in the sprawling digital ad business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proposing an updated approach that elevates user choice,\u201d Anthony Chavez, a vice president at Google, wrote Monday in the blog post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of deprecating third-party cookies, we would introduce a new experience in Chrome that lets people make an informed choice that applies across their web browsing, and they\u2019d be able to adjust that choice at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move marks a major shift for Google, which for years has worked to implement Privacy Sandbox, its plan to replace cookies with other tools for advertisers.<\/p>\n<p>The company said it will continue to offer those tools to developers.<\/p>\n<p>The UK Competition and Markets Authority, which regulates the tech industry, said Monday that it will gather comments on Google\u2019s new approach until Aug. 12.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said earlier this year that it was reviewing Google\u2019s plans after fielding more concerns about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle has confirmed a new approach to third-party cookies.
