However, Nigeria\u2019s Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) officially invited interested parties to express their interest in a 51% stake in April this year. It hopes to complete the process by September. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The BPE released the short-list, cut down from the 22 consortia that expressed an interest in Nitel, this morning. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The other short-listed candidates are Celtel, the sub-Saharan Africa cellular giant that MTN missed out on buying recently, as well as Algerian operator Osracom, Orion Telecommunications\u2019 NewTel and a consortium including the Chinese telecoms equipment company Huawei, the Huawei\/Jacuz consortium. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">In the context of the Telkom\/Vodacom bid, Telkom is interested in the fixed line operations, and Vodacom, in the mobile operations, called M-Tel. This is Vodacom\u2019s second iron in the Nigerian fire, however. It is also bidding for third biggest mobile operator in Nigeria, V-Mobile, in a consortium including Vodafone. But, the latter bid is subject to ongoing, long-standing litigation around whether Econet Wireless has the right to increase its stake in the operator or not. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">MTN is already the dominant player in the Nigerian mobile market and is bidding for Nitel through its subsidiary in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Other South African companies that had expressed an interest, but have not made the short-list, include Dimension Data and Mzi Khumalo\u2019s Metallon. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Unsuccessful bidders from elsewhere include Vodafone and Tata\u2019s Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), among others. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">For the successful six, now called \u201cpre-qualified\u201d bidders, the next step is to pay a fee of $35 000 for access to an electronic data room in order for them to start their due diligence investigations. <\/font><\/p>\n<p \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A consortium of Telkom and Vodacom, and another of MTN, have made a short-list of just six candidates that stand in line to buy a controlling stake in the incumbent operator in Africa\u2019s most populous country, Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-546594","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-technology"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/546594"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=546594"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/546594\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=546594"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=546594"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=546594"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
