{"id":547159,"date":"2005-10-31T11:25:13","date_gmt":"2005-10-31T11:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/wordpress\/technology\/547159-e-mails-intercepted-in-crime-fight.html"},"modified":"2005-10-31T11:25:13","modified_gmt":"2005-10-31T11:25:13","slug":"e-mails-intercepted-in-crime-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/547159-e-mails-intercepted-in-crime-fight.html","title":{"rendered":"E-mails intercepted in crime fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"2\">Spokesman Lesley Mashokwe said while the Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-related Information Act allowed for the lawful interception of communications, this could only be done after authorisation by a judge especially designated to perform that function. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">&quot;While the justice minister, Brigitte Mabandla, has yet to appoint a judge, the act is in operation at the moment,&quot; said Mashokwe. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">&quot;However, for the act to be a success, it requires the co-operation of the private sector, especially telecommunication service providers, as well as individual owners of cellphones.&quot; <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Mashokwe said the act placed a duty on telecommunication service providers to obtain and keep information on their clients should this be required for detecting or investigating serious crimes. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">&quot;In order to control the lawful use of cellphones and SIM cards, the act requires that lost, stolen or destroyed cellphones and SIM cards be reported at any police station.
