Apple Computer yesterday unveiled its first computers based on Intel Corp’s chips, the first to sport the technology since the two announced a strategic tie-up last year. <\/font><\/p>\n

Apple co-founder and chief executive Steve Jobs revealed the new Intel-powered iMac desktop computer to the world with his signature theatrical drama at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, confirming rumours that had been swirling around which new product the notoriously secretive firm would unveil. <\/font><\/p>\n

Effective immediately, all iMac computers and the soon to be released Apple laptop the Macbook Pro will use the new Intel Core Duo processor that was unveiled last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. <\/font><\/p>\n

"This ushers in a new generation of iMacs," Jobs told the audience. "We started a partnership less than a year ago to make this happen – it’s been incredible how our engineers have bonded and how well this has gone," he said. <\/font><\/p>\n

Jobs was joined on stage by Intel chief executive Paul Otellini, who appeared amid a cloud of smoke wearing white hazmat suit and symbolically delivered the chip to Jobs. <\/font><\/p>\n

"The iMac has already been praised as ‘the gold standard of desktop PCs,’ so we hope customers really love the new iMac, which is up to twice as fast," said Jobs. <\/font><\/p>\n

"With Mac OS X plus Intel’s latest dual-core processor under the hood, the new iMac delivers performance that will knock our customers? socks off," he added. <\/font><\/p>\n

The iMac now features Intel’s processors, as well as a built-in video camera and Apple remote control system. It is prices in the US market starting from $1,299. <\/font><\/p>\n

Apple is famous for fiercely guarding its product announcements until Jobs’ speech at Macworld, which last year featured the unveiling of the iPod Shuffle portable music player. <\/font><\/p>\n
