Surprisingly \u2018Janet Jackson\u2019 topped the list. I guess if one takes her rather exposing performance at the Surperbowl into account it explains the ranking. Less surprising were the terms \u2018Hurricane Katrina\u2019 and \u2018tsunami\u2019 which vied for position two and three.<\/font> <\/p>\n

The term \u2018xBox\u2019 was the fourth most searched term, and from here onwards celebrities in the news took over. \u2018Brad Pitt\u2019 finished 5th, \u2018Michael Jackson\u2019 6th, \u2018American Idol\u2019 7th, \u2018Britney Spears\u2019 8th, \u2018Angelina Jolie\u2019 9th and \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 10th. <\/font><\/p>\n

When we consider the Google\u2019s South African search terms the story looks very different. <\/font><\/p>\n

The top three search terms during November were \u2018absa\u2019, \u2018christmas\u2019 and \u2018computicket\u2019. Hardly what one classifies as entertainment.<\/font> <\/p>\n

\u2018Webmail\u2019, \u20183gp\u2019, \u2018kulula\u2019, \u2018ipod\u2019, \u2018www.fnb.co.za\u2019, \u2018standard bank\u2019 and \u2018summer\u2019 completes the top 10 creating a rather bland line-up when compared to our overseas neighbours.<\/font> <\/p>\n

It is obvious that South Africans are using the Internet more for business related issues than their international counterparts. <\/font><\/p>\n

There are nearly no entertainment related search terms in the local top 10 while International searches are dominated by these terms.<\/font> <\/p>\n

The high cost of local Internet access (especially on dial-up) coupled with the fact that many users access the Net from work may account for the fact that South Africans use the Internet as a business tool.<\/font> <\/p>\n

It is not surprising taking these factors into consideration that online banking and email dominates local Internet usage.<\/font> <\/p>\n

With increased broadband penetration this trend is likely to change. <\/font><\/p>\n

When users have unlimited or un-metered Internet access they will start to explore the web and realize that there is more to it than reading emails, transferring funds or reading the latest news.<\/font> <\/p>\n
