The Johannesburg Internet Exchange (JINX) exists to enable ISPA members to interconnect their networks and exchange traffic in order to save costs.<\/font> <\/p>\n

"ISPA decided to review the equivalent line charge model to bring it up to date with the current telecommunications environment,\u201d said Gregory Massel, ISPA’s Technical Committee chairperson.<\/font> <\/p>\n

"ISPA hopes that the removal of these charges for connections up to 2 megabytes per second will also encourage smaller ISPA members to make use of the exchange."<\/font> <\/p>\n

The idea behind the charges was one of fairness and was brought about by the fact that ISPs located in the same Rosebank building as JINX can connect more easily and cheaply to JINX than other ISPs.<\/font> <\/p>\n

Equivalent line charges were created to level the playing field between those ISPs located within the Rosebank building that don\u2019t have to use Telkom to connect to JINX and those ISPs not located within the Rosebank building and which have to connect to JINX via Telkom.<\/font> <\/p>\n

ISPA’s Management Committee has approved an updated schedule of Equivalent Line Charges (see <\/font>http:\/\/www.ispa.org.za\/jinx<\/font> <\/a>) which should make JINX more attractive to smaller ISPs.<\/font> <\/p>\n

ISPA has also decided to issue a call for proposals to host JINX for the 2006 \u2013 2009 period. Proposals based on the specifications listed on <\/font>http:\/\/www.ispa.org.za\/jinx\/proposals.shtml<\/font> <\/a>should be forwarded to <\/font>proposals@ispa.org.za<\/font> <\/a>by 17h00 on Tuesday, 28 February 2006.<\/font> <\/p>\n
