The growth in the online population also means that websites have become busier. But which sites are the biggest and busiest in South Africa?<\/font> <\/p>\n

The January 2006 OPA (Online Publishers Association) statistics reveal that News24, IOL and MWeb are the busiest sites amoung their members.<\/font> <\/p>\n

News24 and IOL attracted 1.47 million and 1.12 million unique visitors respectively during January, while MWeb came in a cool third with 687 thousand visitors. <\/font><\/p>\n

The stats on \u2018local\u2019 traffic drop significantly with News24 attracting 606 thousand locals while MWeb is visited by 571 thousand South Africans and IOL by 412 thousand.<\/font> <\/p>\n

It appears that on the whole the \u201824\u2019 conglomerate is doing well, occupying six of the top twenty sites in South Africa, with Health24 at no. 5, Wheels24 at no. 9, Finance24 at no. 11 and Women24 at no. 15.<\/font> <\/p>\n

Media24 seems to have the winning formula when it comes to local online content provisioning and it is not surprising that many of their sites are showing significant growth.<\/font> <\/p>\n

The top ten is completed by iAfrica at number 4, Mail&Guardian at number 6, Ananzi at number 7, Tonignt.co.za at number 8 and Motoring.co.za at number 10.<\/font> <\/p>\n

When it comes to monthly Page Impressions the situation looks very similar. <\/font><\/p>\n

News24 is first with 14.8 million pages services, followed by MWeb with 11.8 million, CareerJunction with 10.8 million and IOL with 10 million. <\/font><\/p>\n

It is difficult to find trustworthy statistics regarding non-OPA members, but there are certainly very busy sites outside of the OPA membership circle. <\/font><\/p>\n

MyADSL, for example, attracted 132 thousand unique visitors over January this year and served over 2 million pages. <\/font><\/p>\n

South African websites are still small fry in comparison to their International counterparts but there is significant growth in the online arena. <\/font><\/p>\n

Increased broadband penetration and Internet usage will further fuel areas like local content development, online advertising and eCommerce.<\/font> <\/p>\n

If the local online market is left to grow unfettered by exorbitant prices we should see South Africans using the Net increasingly for recreational purposes and not just for business.<\/font> <\/p>\n
