{"id":548119,"date":"2006-03-02T06:09:55","date_gmt":"2006-03-02T06:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/wordpress\/technology\/548119-telkom-adsl-users-coughing-up.html"},"modified":"2006-03-02T06:09:55","modified_gmt":"2006-03-02T06:09:55","slug":"telkom-adsl-users-coughing-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/548119-telkom-adsl-users-coughing-up.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom ADSL users coughing up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"2\">Recent statistics indicate that the average price in Europe for a 1 megabit per second connection, a fairly standard package, is 37 euros or R 268-00 per month.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">South Africans are paying R929-00 per month for an inferior, shaped 1 Mbps connection.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The price difference is staggering with South Africans paying over three times as much as the European user.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">A more accurate comparison is to examine local products which are similar to the offerings in Europe. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">In South Africa high-cap unshaped ADSL services will cost users R 3940-40, a similar shaped product will cost R 2526-80. These figures are 1470% and 943% higher than what one will pay in Europe.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Even when comparing Telkom\u2019s far inferior standard 1 Mbps ADSL offering, which provides users with 3 GB of shaped bandwidth at R 929-00 per month, the price gap is still overwhelming at 347% more expensive than the European average.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The bad news is that this trend looks set to remain. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">European prices for broadband continue to drop and this past year saw on average a 47% decrease for the price of a 1 Mbps connection in Europe.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The price for Telkom\u2019s 1 Mbps ADSL service has not decreased at all since its launch in September last year.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Surprisingly the cheapest services are not to be found in the UK, Germany, France or the Netherlands, but rather in Lithuania where the average monthly cost for a 1 Mbps connection is only 14 euros which is just over R 100-00. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The reason for the price reductions over the last year is mainly due to increased competition in the broadband arena.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Sadly, without true competition in the South African fixed line arena the price of ADSL is unlikely to fall in line with international standards anytime soon.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=38548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font size=\"2\">Discuss this article<\/font><\/a> <\/p>\n<p \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South African ADSL users are paying far more for their broadband connections than their European counterparts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-548119","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-technology"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/548119"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=548119"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/548119\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=548119"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=548119"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=548119"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
