Forums pass half a million post mark

MyADSL, which was started in 2003 as an online meeting place for broadband users, has evolved dramatically since its humble beginnings as a basic forum.

The online community now has around 12 000 registered members, with many more ‘anonymous guests’ frequenting this popular online destination.

When MyADSL was started back in 2003, Telkom’s ADSL offering was the only broadband service available to consumers with only a few thousand subscribers.

Initial forum discussions focused on the poor performance and exorbitant pricing of ADSL, something that has interestingly enough not changed much over time for obvious reasons.

Since its humble beginnings MyADSL has evolved dramatically. The most significant change to the initial forum-based website was the addition of the very successful news front-end, serving the broadband and IT community with relevant industry news.

The forum itself has also evolved a great deal since its inception. Apart from changing platforms and software, many new sub-forums accommodating other broadband providers were opened. The demand for varied discussions grew, and the forum section currently has over 20 very active discussion areas.

MyADSL became known for its informed, mature and honest discussions. Most of MyADSL’s visitors are working professionals in the IT, SME and Corporate environment, separating it from many other forums catering for a younger market.

Due to the evolution in discussions and available broadband products the domain was moved to mybroadband.co.za. A name change was on the card, but members felt strongly that the MyADSL brand was too entrenched to consider this option.

During the last few years many famous, and in many cases infamous, members arose on the forums. Apart from well known members, certain discussions – or threads as they are known as in online forums – became very popular.

Threadkiller , aka TK, is the biggest and boldest of all threads. With over 30 000 posts this single thread is bigger than most other South African forums.

MyADSL Forum’s success lies in its high caliber member base – individuals who are willing to share experiences and knowledge openly in this online environment and assist other members where possible.

The MyADSL Forums are maintained and run by its members, which makes it a truly community based entity. It is an excellent example of how community members can work together to decide what goes and what doesn’t, without any concerns other than the well being of the community as a whole.

Here is to another half-a-million posts!

Discuss this
