In the quest to cover every inch of the globe, Google Maps has now added Antarctica to its ever-growing list of locations available for Street View.<\/p>\n
While there aren\u2019t many streets, Google shows off Antarctica\u2019s inhospitable cold, glaciers, snowy vistas and penguins.<\/p>\n
One of the main focuses of the new addition is to teach users about the history of the Antarctic explorations.<\/p>\n
The images were captured with a lightweight tripod camera using a fisheye lens, because traditional lenses were unable to capture the vastness of the environments.<\/p>\n
“The goal of these efforts is to provide scientists and travel (or penguin) enthusiasts all over the world with the most accurate, high-resolution data of these important historic locations,” Google\u2019s Alex Starns wrote.<\/p>\n
“With this access, school children as far as Bangalore can count penguin colonies on Snow Hill Island, and geologists in Georgia can trace sedimentary layers in the Dry Valleys from the comfort of their desks.”<\/p>\n
