{"id":553078,"date":"2024-07-31T10:22:47","date_gmt":"2024-07-31T08:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=553078"},"modified":"2024-07-31T10:22:53","modified_gmt":"2024-07-31T08:22:53","slug":"microsoft-azure-outage-was-a-ddos-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/553078-microsoft-azure-outage-was-a-ddos-attack.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Azure outage was a DDoS attack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Microsoft said an outage of Azure cloud applications was triggered by a distributed-denial-of-service cyberattack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DDoS attack began early Tuesday and an error in Microsoft\u2019s automated protection mechanisms worsened the impact rather than mitigating it, the company said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.status.microsoft\/en-us\/status\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">status update<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers were affected in multiple regions, including services running on Azure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, mobile ordering at Starbucks Corp. was disabled for hours because of the issues affecting Azure, according to a person familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denial-of-service attacks direct internet traffic at a website in mass volume to disrupt it or shut it down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incidents have become a\u00a0persistent annoyance\u00a0for financial institutions, causing intermittent downtime and forcing security staffers to repel the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports of outages on Azure and Microsoft 365 began to spike shortly after 7 a.m. in New York and comprised hundreds of complaints at the incident\u2019s peak, according to user reports&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.com\/status\/microsoft-365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compiled<\/a>&nbsp;by Downdetector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft said the incident was fixed by about 5 p.m. in New York.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue also affected multiple Microsoft 365 services and features, Microsoft said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MSFT365Status\/status\/1818267438435147865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post on social network X<\/a>.
